Enjoy cycling on the Ciro Trail with a team that was directly involved in the project. Ciro is our product and we love our work, so you are certainly in the right place to experience the history of Ciro first hand with the right people.

Whether you’re a cycling-enthusiast hunting for a hidden gem of a route, or a railway-aficiando passionate about charting old tracks, or a lover of soaring mountain greenery…then the Ciro Trail is for you. This magical 100-mile three-day romp between the old town of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast follows the old Austro-Hungarian railway line that once ran all the way to Vienna. First skirts the Neretva River all the way from Mostar to Čapljina, sweeps through the epic Hutovo Blato Nature Park, the path then descends the Dinaric Alps through barren borderlands still riddled with mines from the Balkan War ending on the Croatian coast in Dubrovnik. Passing-by lofty monasteries and mountain watchtowers and passing-through viaducts and old railway tunnels, the path is mostly flat, traffic-free and well-signposted throughout. Other potential highlights/stop-offs along this truly special adventure include the Vjetrenica caves, kayaking on Trebižat river (see more on our Water sports tours), the stunning ancient hilltop fortifications of Počitelj, and the great wine cellars of Herzegovina. Perhaps best of all, accommodation along the Ćiro trail comes in the form of beautifully converted old railway stations. This is a must-do trip!

Because Ćiro is our product and we do it out of love!

The Railroad of Ciro is historically remembered for it’s steam locomotives, it passes through the landscapes of Hercegovina starting in Mostar alongside the Neretva river all the way across the border of Croatia, ending in Dubrovnik. The construction of this trail started in 1898 and ended in 1901. Today this trail is reconstructed into a cycling trail.

What to Expect

A unique experience on the world-famous Ciro cycling route that connects the two countries by cycling from Mostar to Trebinje and further towards Dubrovnik. Cycle and discover our natural heritage!

On this section, we will cycle from Čapljina to Ravno, visiting Mogorjelo – Roman Villa Rustica, taking breaks at Ćira’s stations, various lookouts and rest areas, and crossing the bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, an engineer who also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Also, it is important to emphasize that on this section we have a real adventure in the length of 18km since on the part from Dračevo (near Čapljina) to Hutovo selo we cycle on a macadam section and pass through 10 Ćira tunnels. Don’t let this macadam scare you, the trail is not difficult, and the lookouts that this section has are breathtaking. It is mandatory to bring lighting on the bike to go through the tunnels.
Arriving in Hutovo selo, you can refresh yourself and treat yourself to a beer in a local cafe next to the Ciro station. The rest of the section in the length of 35 km is on an asphalt surface and the trail is flat. In Ravno we will visit the renovated Ćiro station which is today a famous motel and restaurant, and after that we continue towards Zavala where we end our journey with lunch and local cuisine.

Get to know the locals, their lives and customs, and discover their hospitality. Ciro Railroad is a trail that will surely enchant you and leave wonderful experiences and memories, and cycling along this trail you will discover all the charms of the Balkans and the beautiful views and landscapes of nature that Herzegovina offers. This is a trail that has been written about by many world-famous magazines, such as the British “The Guardian” and the American “New York Times”, while Lonly Planet has ranked this trail as the fourth most desirable tourist destination.

Itinerary

09:00 AMStart point: Restaurant Storia in Čapljina

The excursion starts in Čapljina, restaurant Storia, where you can have caffe or breakfast. After coffe in Storia, we continue through the city streets towards the exit from the city and further towards Mogorjelo (Roman Villa Rustica). At the exit from the center of Čapljina, the route passes by the old fortified castle of Mogorjelo from the time of Octavian Augustus, which was discovered during the construction of the Metković – Mostar railway (1884-1885). An archeological monument from Roman times was created on the foundations of the late antique villa Rustica, which was built on the ruins of an older suburban villa.

Within Mogorjelo there is an equestrian club, so if you have enough time you can afford an hour of riding on these noble animals. If you don’t have time to ride, you always have a minute to take photos. 😉

10:30 AMCycling from Čapljina to Brštanica

After visiting the Mogorjelo, we cycle through beautiful sections and the old Ćiro bridges over the Neretva, all the way to Dračevo. From Gabela, the route separates to the southeast and crosses the Neretva River over the old railway bridge Tresana, continues over the bridge Krupa and the river of the same name, and enters the town of Dračevo where it passes under the main road M-17. In Dračevo, the bicycle route forks into two sections, the asphalt route that ascends from Svitava to Hutovo, and the macadam route that follows the route of the old narrow-gauge railway through high walls, embankments, through deep cuts to 19 kilometers away from the former railway station in Hutovo.  If you are not a road cyclist at heart, we definitely recommend that you ride the macadam section where you will visit many historic Ćiro buildings, such as the bridge designed by Eifeel (the engineer who designed the Eifeel Tower in Paris). Riding along the section gives a beautiful view of Hutovo polje, while also passing through 10 Ćiro tunnels. We recommend a short break or picnic break at the Brštanica station. From Hutovo selo follows the asphalted and well-marked section all the way to Ravno and further to Zavala, where we end the journey.

4:30 PMGesthouse Zavala

Our jurney finis at gesthouse Zavala, but you are not quite finish. Once you arrive at the Zavala restaurant you still have time to visit the Vjetrenica Cave which is only 50 meters from the restaurant.

Vjetrenica is a hydrologically active flowing speleological object with as many as 4 watercourses, and dozens of smaller periodic streams with underground lakes. It is located in the area of the South Dinaric karst, with the entrance at the very edge of Popovo polje, 300m east of the center of the village of Zavala at 260m above sea level, 12km air distance to the Adriatic Sea.

6:00 PMEnd jurney

After visiting the Vjetrenica Cave, refreshments will follow in the Zavala restaurant before we finish our trip. Of course, if you want to spend the night in Zavala, it is always an option, since the restaurant Zavala has accommodation facilities, and we must add that the mornings in Zavala are simply amazing and you have to experience them.
