Enjoy cycling on the Ciro Trail with a team that was directly involved in the project. Ciro is our product and we love our work, so you are certainly in the right place to experience the history of Ciro first hand with the right people.

Whether you’re a cycling-enthusiast hunting for a hidden gem of a route, or a railway-aficiando passionate about charting old tracks, or a lover of soaring mountain greenery…then the Ciro Trail is for you. This magical 100-mile three-day romp between the old town of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast follows the old Austro-Hungarian railway line that once ran all the way to Vienna. First skirts the Neretva River all the way from Mostar to Čapljina, sweeps through the epic Hutovo Blato Nature Park, the path then descends the Dinaric Alps through barren borderlands still riddled with mines from the Balkan War ending on the Croatian coast in Dubrovnik. Passing-by lofty monasteries and mountain watchtowers and passing-through viaducts and old railway tunnels, the path is mostly flat, traffic-free and well-signposted throughout. Other potential highlights/stop-offs along this truly special adventure include the Vjetrenica caves, kayaking on Trebižat river (see more on our Water sports tours), the stunning ancient hilltop fortifications of Počitelj, and the great wine cellars of Herzegovina. Perhaps best of all, accommodation along the Ciro trail comes in the form of beautifully converted old railway stations. This is a must-do trip!

Because Ciro is our product and we do it out of love!

The Railroad of Ciro is historically remembered for it’s steam locomotives, it passes through the landscapes of Hercegovina starting in Mostar alongside the Neretva river all the way across the border of Croatia, ending in Dubrovnik. The construction of this trail started in 1898 and ended in 1901. Today this trail is reconstructed into a cycling trail.

What to Expect

A unique experience on the world-famous Ciro cycling route that connects the two countries by cycling from Mostar to Trebinje and further towards Dubrovnik. Cycle and discover our natural heritage!

We will start our day with a coffee in the restaurant Zavala, and then we will go on a tour in the Cave Vjetrenica. After visiting Vjetrenica, we will cycle along the Ćiro railway towards the most famous Ćiro station “Hum”, and during the ride we will pass many other Ćiro stations that are now abandoned or renovated and are in private ownership. While cycling, we will enjoy the view of Popovo polje, which is indicated to our left, while the asphalt surface on which we ride along the entire path is flat and light.
In Ivanica, where the border with the Republic of Croatia is, we take a break for a picnic. After crossing the border and entering Croatia, there is a descent towards Dubrovnik, a lively city full of travelers from all over the world. In Dubrovnik you have the opportunity to visit the old town with a local guide (on request) or simply go to your hotel to relax before setting out to tour in the city.

Get to know the locals, their lives and customs, and discover their hospitality. Ciro Railroad is a trail that will surely enchant you and leave wonderful experiences and memories, and cycling along this trail you will discover all the charms of the Balkans and the beautiful views and landscapes of nature that Herzegovina offers. Itinerary

09.00 AMStart point: Restaurant Zavala

The excursion starts in restaurant Zavala, where you can have caffe or breakfast. After coffe in Zavala, you can visit the Vjetrenica Cave, and you even have time to include visits to the museum in Zavala, as well as visiting of the Zavala Monastery.

10.00 AMCycling from Zavala to Dubrovnik

After visiting the Cave Vjetrenica, we cycle from Zavala to Ivanica, with short breaks at various lookouts and rest areas. We definitely recommend taking a picnic (lunch package) in Ivanica, a small village located at the Gornji Brgat border crossing (Croatia). After you have regained your energy, you cross the border with the Republic of Croatia, from where you descend to Dubrovnik.

From Hum, the cycling route stretches towards the Mediterranean pearl Dubrovnik, whose Old Town, as well as the Old Town in Mostar, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. On the way to Dubrovnik, the route passes through Uskoplje, from which two railways came out, which went east and south. The Zelenička railway turned left from the exit turnout below the village of Uskoplje and curved up the hill with an ascent of 17.5 per mille towards Glavska and further towards Zelenika in the Bay of Kotor. The second line exited in the direction of Ivanica, and entered the Republic of Croatia through a tunnel, so with a slope of 27.8 per mille it went down the serpentine towards Dubrovnik.

4:00 PMEnd trip: Dubrovnik

We end our trip by visiting the world-famous, historic old town of Dubrovnik.

George Bernard Shaw was enchanted by this beautiful city, about which he said “those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik”, as well as, famously, describing it as “the pearl of the Adriatic”. It really is a stunning city with an amazing Old Town, which became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

Although the shelling of Dubrovnik in 1991 horrified the world, the city has bounced back with vigour to enchant visitors again. Marvel at the interplay of light on the old stone buildings; trace the peaks and troughs of Dubrovnik’s past in museums replete with art and artefacts; take the cable car up to Mt Srđ; exhaust yourself climbing up and down narrow lanes – then plunge into the azure sea.
