Neum & Ston Bay Oyster farming: Cycle for unique oyster tasting experience!

Start point: Neum
Cycling from Neum to Ston along the beautiful old road that rises above Neum, we will enjoy the silence, the smell of the sea and pine trees, while also having a beautiful view of the sea. We start cycling in Neum with a short ascent in the length of 3-4 km, from where we continue on the old road to Ston. The tour is continued by crossing the border with Croatia and passing by some the old villages and monuments, remnants of the Homeland War, as there was a demarcation line between Croatia and Bosnian Serbs. We will pass by Vjetrenice, with a short break for photography, from where we will descend towards Ston. In Ston, lunch and a tour of the oldest saltpans in Europe are possible – optional as well as the City Walls of Ston. After a break in the table we continue towards Ston Bay and Shellfish farm to get acquainted with the production of sea Oysters & taste some fresh oysters. The boat will take us across the sea to our bike path which we continue our bike ride back to Neum.

Mali Ston Bay is a nature reserve known for its long tradition of growing oysters (Ostrea edulis) and mussels (Muytilus galloprovincialis). One of the attractions you can experience in Mali Ston Bay is a boat ride to the oyster farms and tasting it directly from the sea, freshly drizzled with a few drops of lemon juice.

Neum is a municipality in the extreme south of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is the only exit to the Adriatic Sea of the country. Thanks to long and warm summers, short and mild winters, Neum is considered one of the coastal towns with the highest number of sunny days a year.
History of Neum
Since ancient times, the area of Neum has been known as a significant crossroad that led from the coast to the hinterland. Neum was first mentioned in the 4th century, in 533, under the name “Neuense”. Until 1718, Neum was part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, when it was handed over to the Turks for the needs of ships and the supply of military units in the hinterland. In 1878, Neum and the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, until the end of the First World War in 1918. In the second half of the last century, the first resorts, hotels and other tourist facilities emerged.
This is a unique oyster tasting experience. It will guide you through the history of oyster farming in Mali Ston bay where oysters were grown since Roman times. It is the only place where Ostrea Edulis – the European oyster is farmed today. You will learn all about the history of oyster farming since the Dubrovnik republic and witness the oyster growing process. Oysters are paired with fantastic local wine grown in the vicinity.
