Franciscana “Herzegovina Route” is a unique 8-day cycling journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina, connecting centuries of Franciscan heritage with breathtaking natural landscapes and authentic local culture. This route leads cyclists through historic towns, monasteries, museums, and spiritual sites that have shaped the identity of the region for over 700 years.

Starting in Mostar, the route passes through Međugorje, Ljubuški, Posušje, Blidinje Nature Park, Rama Lake, Tomislavgrad, and Livno, combining cultural discovery, spiritual reflection, and cycling through unspoiled nature. Along the way, riders enjoy scenic villages, vineyards, lakes, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes, as well as traditional Herzegovinian gastronomy and warm local hospitality.

DAY 1WELCOME TO MOSTAR!

Arrival: Mostar, Capital of Herzegovina 

Upon arrival, transfer to Mostar and check in at the Dompes Hotel, a modern, bike-friendly hotel near the Franciscan Monastery. Begin your exploration in the Old Town, strolling along cobblestone streets, visiting the Stari Most (Old Bridge), and admiring the Franciscan Church of St. Peter and Paul with its panoramic city views.

End the day with a taste of authentic Herzegovinian cuisine at a local restaurant, enjoying traditional dishes that reflect the region’s rich culinary heritage.

DAY 2MOSTAR TO LJUBUŠKI

A Journey Through History, Spirituality & Nature

After breakfast, we begin cycling along the historic Ćiro Trail, a scenic former railway line following the Neretva River. Pass through charming villages to reach Međugorje, Europe’s renowned pilgrimage site, where visitors experience its serene atmosphere and the iconic church.

Continue to the stunning Kravice Waterfalls, a perfect spot for a picnic and photos amid lush surroundings. The day ends in Ljubuški with a visit to the Franciscan Monastery of St. Anthony of Padua in Humac, home to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest museum (est. 1884) and the famous Humac Stone, featuring the oldest known Croatian inscription.

DAY 3LJUBUŠKI TO GRUDE

A Scenic Journey Along the Trebižat River

Start the day cycling through Ljubuški, then follow the picturesque Trebižat River, famous for its crystal-clear waters and lush scenery. Stop at the Koćuša Waterfall in Veljaci, a charming natural spot surrounded by traditional mills and stone pillars—perfect for photos and a moment of relaxation.

Continue to Adventure Park Peć Mlini, rich in Roman, medieval, and modern heritage, and the source of the unique “Phoenix River,” which sinks and re-emerges nine times along its course. Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant before cycling past Krenica Lake and through the village of Drinovci, arriving in Grude for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4GRUDE TO BLIDINJE NATURE PARK

Today’s ride takes you from Grude to the stunning Blidinje Nature Park, passing through scenic Posušje. After a short break and picnic in Posušje, the route climbs toward Blidinje, offering spectacular views of mountains and valleys along the way.

In Blidinje Nature Park, enjoy pristine landscapes, Blidinje Lake, and fresh mountain air. Continue to Masna Luka, home to the Franciscan Monastery of St. Elias, where you can explore the monastery gallery and experience spiritual tranquility surrounded by lush forests and the famous Jasle Spring.

Dinner and overnight stay at Masna Luka Monastery complete a day filled with adventure, nature, and cultural heritage.

Today’s ride starts in Blidinje Nature Park and descends 30 km toward Jablanica, cycling alongside the scenic Jablanica Lake—a perfect spot for a picnic amid mountain views.

The route then climbs to Prozor-Rama, home to the stunning Rama Lake. Explore the Šćit Peninsula and visit the Franciscan Monastery and Museum, housed in an 1857 building showcasing the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. The museum features ethnographic exhibits, historical artifacts, and insights into local traditions.

Stop at Eco Village Grabovica for lunch, meet the locals, and experience traditional farm life before continuing to Livno. Here, visit the Franciscan Monastery and Museum, home to archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic collections, including works by renowned painter Gabriel Jurkić.

    2IS THE TOUR THE RIGHT LEVEL FOR ME?

    We rate our tours from Level 1 (Leisure) to Level 4 (Epic). Each tour contains a description of the level, expected daily ride time, distance and elevation. If you have any doubts we’re more that happy to speak to you on the phone and help to find you the perfect trip!

    3WHAT ABOUT BIKES? CAN I HIRE ONE OR SHOULD I BRING MY OWN?

    We recommend that you hire a bike for your tour and will work with you after you book to help you to choose the best size and model for your ride style. If you prefer to bring your bike, it’s no problem. Please be aware that on some of our epic trips we charge a supplement to transport your bike box to our finishing location. If you have any doubts, please ask!

    4IS INSURANCE INCLUDED?

    Insurance is not included in our tour packages. We highly recommend contracting travel insurance at the time of reservation with a company from where you are from.

    Health insurance which covers you for illness or injury whilst cycling in your chosen destination is mandatory, we’ll ask you for details of your insurance provider before you travel.
