8-Day Unforgettable Cycling Adventure: Organized by ERO Travel

Imagine a journey where every pedal stroke reveals a new world – where history intertwines with nature, and each climb leads to breathtaking views. The cycling route Sarajevo – Mostar – Dubrovnik takes you through the very heart of the Balkans, across mountain passes, forgotten villages, and winding valleys, all the way to the sun-drenched shores of the Adriatic Sea.

From Sarajevo – Where It All Begins

Your journey begins in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo– a city that breathes history and blends the soul of the East and the West. The Old Town, Baščaršija, the call to prayer and church bells sounding at the same time… From this vibrant heart of the city, your adventure leads you into the quiet majesty of the surrounding mountains.

Mountain Heights and Forgotten Worlds

The route takes you to the mighty Bjelasnica, across the highland of Lukomir– the highest and most remote inhabited village in Bosnia and Herzegovina – where time seems to stand still and nature speaks. You continue toward Visočica – a breathtaking jewel of untouched nature, a mountain adorned with vast pastures, dense forests, and countless springs of crystal-clear drinking water. Here, silence reigns, occasionally broken only by birdsong or the whisper of wind through pine trees. Visočica is a mountain of peace and majestic views, and each pedal stroke reveals a new perspective of this mountain paradise.

From there, the route descends into the Glavatičevo valley, where the Neretva river dances alongside your path, guiding you to the emerald waters of Boračko Lake – a perfect spot for a short break and immersion in a pristine natural setting. Afterward, wide vistas open up toward the imposing the Prenj mountain rangewhich silently accompanies you all the way to Rujišta – a cool and refreshing oasis above Mostar, a hidden gem in Herzegovina’s mountainous landscape.

Mostar – The City of Light and Bridges

Descending into the Neretva valley, you enter Mostar– a city where East meets West, stone meets water, and past meets present. The UNESCO-listed Old Bridge, stands as a symbol of connection, courage, and beauty. Take time to rest, explore the old streets, breathe in the aroma of coffee, and wander the colorful bazaars.

From Mostar to Dubrovnik – The Ćiro Trail Awaits

From Mostar, a new chapter begins – you join the legendary Ciro Trail, a former narrow-gauge railway line that once connected inland Herzegovina to the coast. Today, it is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in the region. The trail leads you through stunning Herzegovinian landscapes, past old train stations, tunnels, and stone bridges – including those designed by Gustave Eiffel – through villages rich in history and local culture.

This part of the journey offers a true postcard of Herzegovina: rugged terrain, the scent of immortelle and lavender, stone houses, and warm-hearted locals. Along the way, you’ll discover authenticity, simplicity, and wild beauty.

Journey’s End – Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic

And finally – Dubrovnik. The city beneath the walls, where the stone glistens in the sun and the Adriatic Sea whispers stories that span millennia. Here your cycling journey reaches its grand finale – in a UNESCO World Heritage city that welcomes travelers from around the world.

Why Choose This Route?

Because it connects three worlds – the soul of Sarajevo, the heart of Herzegovina and the beauty of the Adriatic. Because it offers a unique combination of mountain challenges, cultural richness, and Mediterranean relaxation. And from Mostar, you ride along the famous Ciro Trail– a path that tells its own extraordinary story.

We begin our day by leaving Čapljina and immediately crossing one of the most impressive engineering landmarks along the Ćiro Trail – Tersana Bridge in Dračevu, the longest railway bridge on the former narrow-gauge line. From here, the trail leads us along a gentle gravel section that opens up to panoramic views of Hutovo Lake, a true oasis of biodiversity.

This unique wetland area, part of the Hutovo Blato Nature Park, is home to over 200 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. As we cycle along its edges, the reflection of the sky in the calm waters and the chorus of wildlife create a magical atmosphere.

We continue uphill toward the village of Cerovica, and then on to the small highland village of Hutovo, where a welcoming local café offers the perfect spot for rest and refreshment. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the magnificent Vjetrenica Cave – the largest and most famous cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its rich biodiversity and underground river passages. It’s a short walk from the trail and an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

After the cave visit, we continue along a flat and scenic section of the Ćiro Trail, gliding past open karst fields and abandoned stations that once buzzed with railway life. As we approach, the scenery transforms into Mediterranean – cypresses, vineyards, and old stone walls welcome us to Trebinje, a city known for its charm, culture, and tranquility.

We end todays cycling journey in this picturesque town, strolling through the shaded streets lined with centuries-old plane trees, enjoying a well-deserved glass of local wine, and celebrating our adventure with a farewell dinner in a traditional tavern, surrounded by the warmth of Herzegovinian hospitality.

Reviews and comments from our guests

  • Five stars is not enough! Toni and Ero travel are an outstanding resource for anyone visiting BiH. He helped me plan a family bike trip on the Ciro Trail many months in advance, answering all my silly little questions. Our trip was complicated, traveling from Alaska with 2 kids (3 and 7), but Toni made sure everything went smoothly. At the last minute we had to adjust plans, and once again Toni came through for us. The cycling was beautiful in such a rugged landscape, with the country’s history at your fingertips. I highly recommend BiH for any adventurous cyclists – and definitely chose Ero for all your logistics. The world would be a better place if we could all be like Toni! Hvala!

  • Cycling Herzegovina – Self Guided

I was seeking a self guided cycle adventure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From the very beginning, Toni was instrumental in creating experiences that encapsulated the essence of the nature, beauty, history, and culture of Herzegovina. This country is full of awe-inspiring beauty and the most warm-hearted and hospitable people you could ever meet.
Toni’s passion and energy for what he does and delivers to you in the way of experiences and memorable moments is exceptional.
I am so grateful to Toni for orchestrating a truly fabulous and memorable experience, one that I will cherish for a long time to come, including the many historical sites, the local warmth of the people (guides and accommodation hosts) and incredible beauty this country has to offer.
Toni delivers above and beyond what you could ever imagine. ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

  • Perfect! We rented two mountainbikes at very short notice. The bikes were in excellent condition and well taken care of, not expensive and with flexible pickup/dropoff times. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful.
Biking the Ciro trail to the south is really fun, even on hot days. You’re always close to the river for a quick splash.

  • Ponuka spoločnosti aj prístup jej pracovníkov bol skutočne výnimočný. Služby tohto bike shopu odporúčam. A to jazdím už cca 20 rokov.

  • I biked the Ciro trail with my mum this summer and (a) the Ciro trail itself is absolutely stunning, well-organised, (practically) all paved and beautiful (b) I would no longer go cycling in August, the temperatures can really be very high if you are unlucky (c) I would definitely book using this company again – they were very helpful, kind and always very organised. Whatever problems we had were solved easily and quickly, the e-bikes we got were in very good shape and everything happened just as planned, we stayed in nice hotels and did not have to organise anything ourselves. It was well worth the money. All in all, it was a great holiday, thank you Toni and Matej!

  • We had a day trip for our family at a very reasonable price to Kravice and Blagaj from Mostar. Our guide and driver Matej was very flexible and patient with family needs and our car was very comfortable. It was perfect for us and helped us to really enjoy the sites of Bosnia!

  • Great bike ride from Mostar to Blagaj and back with lot’s of cool stops on the way. Matej was an awesome guide for our family of four (two adults with two teenagers).

  • Reserved 2 mountain bikes over the weekend via WhatsApp with Toni from Ero Travel. We picked up bikes, helmets, locks, pump, emergency tire patching kit in Capriolo Sport smoothly. We visited the Millennium Cross on the first day, and part of the suggested Ćiro trail from Mostar to Capljina on the next day. The scenic Ćiro trail is amazing with very little traffic and it is relatively flat, suitable for every one. 2 thumbs up!

    Wilson Ho
  • We had a great time during our cycling vacation. The scenery on the Ciro is enchantingly beautiful, very quiet roads. Toni and Stana were wonderful guides, always concerned about their participants. Not only did they support us technically (cycling) but they also introduced us to the history and culture of their country. Highly recommended

  • Definitely the best!

We went bike and horseriding near Mostar and had a traditional (and delicious) dinner in Goranci. Even though the trip we wished to do wasn’t on the website, it was no problem to organise it custom made for us.

Originally we planned to do the trip on Monday. Because the weather would get worse on Monday they especially opened the shop on Sunday for us. We got complimentary helmets and GPS navigation. Even when we got a flat tyre they were there to help!

Never had this experience somewhere else! Thank you so much!!

  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! This is the best bike service I have ever come across, and I’ve cycled with a lot of different bike companies.
Very helpful, I think I asked about 50 questions haha and all of them we answered.
The price is very good for the service and the bike you get.
Great bikes, all the kit you need.
Helped me feel so safe my first time travelling through Herzegovina, I will definitely be back!
