Tour Details

Enjoy cycling on the Ćiro railway with a team that was directly involved in the project. Ćiro is our product and we love our work, so you are certainly in the right place to experience the history of Ciro first hand with the right people.

Whether you’re a cycling-enthusiast hunting for a hidden gem of a route, or a railway-aficiando passionate about charting old tracks, or a lover of soaring mountain greenery…then the Ciro Trail is for you. This magical 100-mile three-day romp between the old town of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast follows the old Austro-Hungarian railway line that once ran all the way to Vienna. First skirts the Neretva River all the way from Mostar to Čapljina, sweeps through the epic Hutovo Blato Nature Park, the path then descends the Dinaric Alps through barren borderlands still riddled with mines from the Balkan War ending on the Croatian coast in Dubrovnik. Passing-by lofty monasteries and mountain watchtowers and passing-through viaducts and old railway tunnels, the path is mostly flat, traffic-free and well-signposted throughout. Other potential highlights/stop-offs along this truly special adventure include the Vjetrenica caves, kayaking on Trebižat river (see more on our Water sports tours), the stunning ancient hilltop fortifications of Počitelj, and the great wine cellars of Herzegovina. Perhaps best of all, accommodation along the Ćiro trail comes in the form of beautifully converted old railway stations. This is a must-do trip!

Because Ćiro is our product and we do it out of love!

The Railroad of Ciro is historically remembered for it’s steam locomotives, it passes through the landscapes of Hercegovina starting in Mostar alongside the Neretva river all the way across the border of Croatia, ending in Dubrovnik. The construction of this trail started in 1898 and ended in 1901. Today this trail is reconstructed into a cycling trail.

Itinerary

09:00 AMStart point: Mostar

The excursion begins in Mostar with a visit to the Old Bridge, where you can have your morning coffee or even breakfast in the old town. After touring the Old Bridge, we continue through the city streets towards the exit from the city and further towards Blagaj. On the way to Blagaj, you pass through the industrial zone of Mostar and further through the famous Mostar vineyards and passing near fruit plantations – “Jaffa Plantations” before visiting Blagaj.

10:00AMBlagaj - oasis of peace

Arriving in Blagaj, you enter a place that has been known for centuries as an oasis of peace and natural harmony and another proof of the natural beauty of BiH. One of the most attractive and most interesting destinations for tourists in Blagaj is certainly the Dervish tekke, then the Old Tower – Stjepan grad, Velagića complex… The whole ambience exudes untouched nature and old customs. Only a few areas can boast of the beauty that Blagaj offers. A large number of tourists return to this place every year.

After visiting Blagaj, we return to Ćira’s bike path, along which we continue our journey towards Čapljina along the beautiful valley of the Neretva River.

12:00AMŽitomislić Monastery

Somewhere halfway to Žitomislići, you pass the Žitomislići Monastery, which we believe is worth a visit, but you will have to get off the Ćiro trail for a while and turn left towards the main road M17 to get to the Monastery. The Žitomislić Monastery is one of the most culturally significant Orthodox monasteries in Herzegovina from the 16th century, and it is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God. It is located in a valley on the road from Mostar to the southern border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the extreme western line of the old area of Dubrava. In the old Hum area, it is the westernmost Orthodox monastery held. The biggest founders of the monastery were from the Miloradović and Hrabren families.

Cycling on the right side of the river Neretva from Baćevići to Čapljina will reveal you all the rural world of cycling, the way of life of the people in Herzegovina and we believe you will enjoy the landscapes that this trail will offer.

3:00PMPočitelj - city of stone

After arriving in Čapljina, turn left towards the old historical settlement of oriental-Mediterranean character located in the valley of the river Neretva and one of the most beautiful cultural and historical sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Počitelj will discover its beautiful landscapes and landscapes of the Neretva Valley, where photography is inevitable.

This fortress was built by King Tvrtko in 1383, and played a strategic role in controlling the way to the sea through the Neretva river valley. Today, the historic town of Pocitelj, built under the fortress, has an oriental appearance and as such is entirely in the function of tourism and cultural events.
This unique settlement is included on the UNESCO list.

Although the town was first mentioned in written documents in 1444, it is assumed that it was built by the Bosnian king Tvrtko in 1383. This medieval town had a Mediterranean look, but after the Turkish conquest it was orientally remodeled. The mixture of these two architectural styles gives Počitelj a special dimension.
Apart from the extraordinary oriental architecture and the Ottoman “trick”, Počitelj is interesting and known as the host of an art colony with the longest tradition in Southeast Europe.

4:00 PMEnd tour in Čapljina

After visiting Počitelj, the easier part follows, and that is the descent towards Čapljina, and a tour of this beautiful Herzegovinian town where we end our journey. Of course, if you still have strength in your legs, after arriving in Čapljina you can visit the Nature Park Hutovo Blato and Mogorjelo – Roman Villa Rustica.
