Herzegovina is one of the last hidden gems of today’s Europe. A narrow region located between Dalmatia and Bosnia, with which it shares a millennia-old history, it still stands out in comparison to these two regions. Above all, Herzegovina is a land that offers biodiversity ranging from high mountains with continental characteristics to river valleys typical of the Mediterranean climate.

From orchards with plums and apples to olive, pomegranate, and fig plantations, to vineyards that yield several indigenous wine varieties found only here. This Mediterranean region, influenced by the Dubrovnik Republic, Venice, and the Kingdom of Hungary, saw the Ottoman conquerors bring the scents of the Orient, new cultural compositions, and religion, ultimately creating a region that has struggled but steadfastly preserved its diversities and peculiarities throughout the years.

Roman roads, Ottoman Empire routes, Napoleon’s roads, and finally, the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s roads are just some of the interesting routes we will traverse by bicycles. For cyclists eager for change and good trails, the Ćiro Trail is an enticing lure that always surprises with its possible directions.

For all enthusiasts of great cycling experiences, we have crafted several unforgettable packages in our surroundings. Welcome to the Ancient Land for new discoveries – Herzegovina!

What to Expect

“What lies behind such mighty rocks leaning against the Adriatic Sea?” travelers would ask in Dalmatian towns.
“Karst and Herzegovina,” the locals would simply answer.
For travelers who above all respect nature, karst and Herzegovina offer exciting and beautiful sights – unforgettable experiences.
The appealing relief – fast rivers with waterfalls, sharp rocks, hills and mountains, plateaus and fields, caves, sinkholes, and crevices have never been fully explored, and that’s their charm.
Man has surrendered to Herzegovinian karst and sun and lives there, in that oasis of the greatest and most beautiful contrasts and challenges. Travelers who come and want to listen to the language of pure nature are gifted by Herzegovina with powerful experiences and inspirations.
This beautiful land of greatest contrasts, whose difference is palpable – is called beauty.
When you think you see it, it turns into the sound of a cricket, when you think you hear it, it turns into the image of the sun.
In Herzegovina, beauty will always find you!

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Sarajevo; Bosnia and Herzegovina

Arrival in Sarajevo We land at Sarajevo Airport, where our guide/tour leader awaits us. We head to the Lights restaurant for a light lunch. During lunch, we get to know each other and toast to the exciting journey ahead of us. After lunch, we tour Sarajevo accompanied by an authorized guide. During our tour, we discuss the turbulent history but also talk about the everyday lives of ordinary people adapted to demanding and capricious rulers who have alternated here over the last 5 centuries. We start from the City Library, which burned down in August 1992 during the siege of the city, and continue past the place where Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Ferdinand of Austria through the beautiful streets founded in the 15th century. It’s time for one of the most beautiful experiences in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We depart from Sarajevo Railway Station where we board a train that takes us through the beautiful landscapes of the country to our hotel in Čapljina. Welcome drink, dinner, and overnight stay at Hotel Storia Čapljina.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2Ćiro's Trail: Čapljina - Zavala

Even today, almost fifty years after its closure, Ćiro’s narrow-gauge railway holds almost mythical significance in the memory of the Herzegovinian people. The closure of this railway led to depopulation in these areas, but thanks to the enthusiasm, especially of cycling enthusiasts, this route is now a world-renowned cycling path. It is featured in all major global magazines, from The New York Times to National Geographic and The Guardian. That’s why we cycle along this path to reconstruct the former life alongside this railway. After passing through the typical Herzegovinian landscape and old railway stations, we arrive at the karst cave Vjetrenica, which we will visit accompanied by an authorized guide who will introduce us to the secrets of this cave.

We finish the ride at a nearby railway station that has been converted into a restaurant offering traditional Herzegovinian specialties. After lunch, we return to the hotel. Free time can be spent by the pool or relaxing before the communal dinner at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3Ćiro Heritage: World Heritage Trail

Today, we will start with a visit to Počitelj. Počitelj is one of the most beautiful examples of Oriental-Mediterranean architecture in this area. This medieval trading crossroads has a long history, but it’s the guide’s job to bring you closer to the golden years of Počitelj. We continue towards the Radimlja Necropolis, after which we enter the small Herzegovinian town of Stolac, known as an oasis in stone. Stolac is a bearer of history from the Stone Age and drawings found in the Badanj Cave to the present day. We enjoy the peace of Stolac’s bazaar and head back to the Domano winery. Just 10 minutes away from our hotel is the Domano winery, famous for its unique sparkling wine made from the indigenous Žilavka grape variety. We tour the cellar, taste Herzegovinian sparkling wine and wines with the excellent hosts of this award-winning winery. Communal dinner at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner

Day 4Trebižat Heritage Cycling Trail

On this day, it is enough to take our bikes to the Kravica Waterfalls and stay in this beautiful oasis, but we love to explore, so after enjoying the natural beauty of the Trebižat River and the Kravica Waterfalls, we continue cycling towards the Franciscan Monastery in Humac, which houses the first archaeological museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the Majka Gallery, a unique collection of artworks on the theme of motherhood. We continue cycling through Ljubuški and head back to the hotel. Relaxation by the hotel pool and communal dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5Mostar - Čapljina

We already have several kilometers behind us on our bikes, but we haven’t reached the Old Bridge in Mostar yet. Today, we set off to Mostar and explore it accompanied by an authorized guide. We use free time to take photos of this unique single-arch bridge dating back to the 16th century. We blend into the crowd of local vendors and tourists and understand the lifestyle between the Mediterranean and the Orient.

After visiting the Spanish Square and the open-air exhibition created through the diligent work of the Mostar Street Art Festival, we head towards Čapljina on our bikes. We ride along the Neretva River, following the old route of Ćiro’s railway, all the way to Čapljina and our hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6Croatia, Mouth of the Neretva River into the Adriatic Sea

Today, we are heading south, all the way to the mouth of the Neretva River into the Adriatic Sea. We start on Ćiro’s path and soon cross the border into Croatia. We continue along the right bank of the Neretva River and realize that we are entering a completely different natural environment. The Neretva River widens, becoming almost like a plain river, but the town of Komin through which we pass is a famous medieval pirate center, surrounded by various stories to this day. From raids on Venetian ships to slave trade and hidden chests with gold in various branches of the river delta. The road you are cycling on was built by the great Enlightenment thinker and military leader Napoleon.

Finally, the Neretva River turns into thousands of canals and water channels. In spring, the entire valley smells like tangerines, and in autumn, we even harvest them ourselves. After a picnic at the mouth of the Neretva River (those who wish can rent a SUP board and enjoy the sea), we head back to Čapljina. Free afternoon, communal dinner at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner

Day 7Cycling Ćiro's Path around Hutovo Blato

The town of Čapljina is situated at the natural crossroads of Herzegovina. In addition to four rivers, Čapljina also encompasses the Hutovo Blato Nature Park, the largest marshland area in this part of Europe. This favorite birdwatching spot also offers an excellent trail for cyclists. Our path takes us around the lake of the Nature Park and provides extraordinary viewpoints. Enjoy your free afternoon by the hotel pool before we serve you an A la chef dinner accompanied by a selection of fine Herzegovinian wines.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner

Day 8Departure

Check out from the hotel and departure to Sarajevo Airport where, after an active week during which we got to know the country, we bid farewell to our guide.

Meals: Breakfast
