The culture of winegrowing and wine production in Bosnia and Herzegovina dates back to the Illyrian period and the Thracians who introduced grapevine seedlings to the Balkans.

Herzegovina Wine Route, in the most beautiful way, rounded up the tourist offer of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tourists from around the world come in groups, almost on a daily basis, to the basements for wine tasting. By introducing autochthonous wines of the Mostar vineyards, they actually present the life of a Herzegovinian man, history, habits…

The wine route of Herzegovina gives you the opportunity to witness all important tourist destinations in Herzegovina. There is the chance to taste two wine varieties: the Žilavka, Blatina, Tranjak and Vranac. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Located near there is the town of Međugorje best known for the apparation of Virgin Mary in 1981. Both are surrounded by vibrant hills and flourishing nature all around. Mogorjelo is a place that homes a Roman Villa dating all the way back to the early fourth century, and Počitelj accommodates an impressive stone-constructed Ottoman Citadel. Both revealing the intriguing heritage of this beautiful region.

Presenting the Wind Varieties:

Žilavka
– Žilavka is a white wine with delicate floral and citrus notes that pairs perfectly with trout, cheese, and other light dishes. It is often aged in oak barrels, which adds complexity to the wine and creates a rich texture. The grape is grown in the rocky soils of Herzegovina, which gives it a distinctive minerality and a long finish.

Blatina
– This red wine is characterized by its deep color and full-bodied flavor, making it a popular choice for pairing with hearty stews and game dishes. Blatina is aged in oak barrels, which adds a touch of vanilla and smoky notes to the wine, creating a rich and complex flavor profile. The grape is grown in the rocky and dry terrain of Herzegovina, which gives the wine its distinctive taste.

Trnjak
– This red wine is a lesser-known variety in Herzegovina but is equally delicious and unique. Trnjak is characterized by its deep color and intense flavor, with notes of blackberry, cherry, and tobacco. It is often aged in oak barrels, which adds a touch of vanilla and smoky notes to the wine, creating a complex and layered flavor profile. The grape is grown in the stony and arid soils of Herzegovina, which give it a distinctive and robust taste.

Vranac
– Vranac is a well-known grape variety in the Balkans, and Herzegovina is no exception. This red wine is known for its rich, fruity flavor, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, and plum. It is aged in oak barrels, which adds complexity to the wine and creates a rich and velvety texture. The grape is grown in the rocky soils of Herzegovina, which give it a unique and intense flavor.

The tour starts in Mostar where you will get a brief history of the city. After that we will take our trip towards the winery. You will be able to see plenty of Herzegovinian wineyards and the stunning river Neretva accompanied by amazing landscape. First stop will be at stop Domano Winery to taste high quality “Žilavka”. After tasting we will visit the historical sightseeing at Počitelj Old town. After the historical sightseeing upon request we will have another stop at Andrija Winery in the heart of the Herzegovina karst, you will taste domestic “Herzegovinian plate” and one of our best local wines. After visiting the Andrija winery, if we have time, there is the possibility of visiting Medjugorje. (on request)

1. StopVisit Domano Winery

More than a winery
In 2007, the winery entered into a strategic partnership with the company MCI doo

The company Domano was founded in 1996 when a small winery in Domanovići was bought by Hepok, a former agricultural giant in Yugoslavia. The winery was demolished due to the war events of the 90s, and most of its equipment was destroyed or stolen. Under the new ownership, the winery was renovated and new modern equipment was procured to start wine production.
The first recognition and award for its work, the winery won at the Zagreb Wine Fair Vinovita in 1999 when it received a silver medal for wine Žilavka. That award came as a confirmation that the winery is well on its way to success.

In 2007, the winery entered into a strategic partnership with the company MCI doo from Široki Brijeg, thus strengthening its presence on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the following years, the production plant and the cellar were expanded and renovated, and a new tasting room with a restaurant for tourist purposes was built. In 2014, the winery achieved significant success at the most prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards competition, when it won silver for Žilavka CZ wine. In 2017 at DWWA, our company achieved the greatest success in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, when it won two platinum medals for Žilavka CZ and Blatina CZ, making these two wines the best wines in the region of Eastern and Central Europe.

2. StopPočitelj Old city

In the Neretva valley, the main stronghold in the defense against the Turks was in Počitelj. This fortress was built by King Tvrtko in 1383, and played a strategic role in controlling the way to the sea through the Neretva river valley. Today, the historic town of Pocitelj, built under the fortress, has an oriental appearance and as such is entirely in the function of tourism and cultural events.
This unique settlement is included on the UNESCO list.

Although the town was first mentioned in written documents in 1444, it is assumed that it was built by the Bosnian king Tvrtko in 1383. This medieval town had a Mediterranean look, but after the Turkish conquest it was orientally remodeled. The mixture of these two architectural styles gives Počitelj a special dimension.
Apart from the extraordinary oriental architecture and the Ottoman “trick”, Počitelj is interesting and known as the host of an art colony with the longest tradition in Southeast Europe.

Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić called it “City of Stone”.

3. StopVisit Andrija Winery

One could not possibly experience the full beauty of Andrija wines by only reading its descriptions, but also by tasting and drinking it moderately. To fully experience it, we will visit Andrija wine cellars in Paoča – within easy reach of Our Lady’s sanctuary in Međugorje.

350-year-old family tradition of growing vineyards and making wine

Šimun Ćorić (1883.-1938.) has served the army for about twelve years and thus earned a big estate. Andrija, his son, has become independent in 1938 and started the winemaking tradition with his wife Stoja. Even though wine has been served in this region earlier, Andrija first started planting the vines in rows and bottle the wine..

In the vineyards of our village Paoča, two famous Herzegovinian grape varieties, white Žilavka and red Blatina founded their place. In the family atmosphere of “Andrija Wine Cellars” in addition to the mentioned indigenous varieties, grapes of other world-famous varieties are also used to make top-quality wines. Continuing the family tradition, the family of Andrija Ćorić build a new wine cellar in Paoča which reached the capacity of one million. Growing its own vineyards, this company buys grapes from a large number of local subcontractors and by choosing the best grapes, with the most modern equipment and expertise of a proven enologist achieves great results in the production of premium and quality wines. These selected wines are matured in oak barrels in an underground wine cellar. In addition to the mentioned wines, ” Andrija Wine Cellars” also produce indigenous brandies. With the development of the market, the company “Andrija Wine Cellars” established its representative office in Zagreb and for many years has secured placement in America, China and many European countries: Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Austria, Serbia and Montenegro. It is a real pleasure to visit the vineyards and wine cellars. “Andrija Wine Cellars” have a dozen permanent employees, and in addition to their own vineyards, a large number of families from this area grow vineyards for them. “Andrija” wines are represented in three continents and always with joy, in good company and pleasant atmosphere. We believe that hospitality, sincere friendship and “Andrija” wines successfully connect people!

4. StopMeđugorje (on request)

Medjugorje – Experience one of the most famous shrines in Europe.

In 1981, Medjugorje became the most famous and most visited pilgrimage shrine in this region after the apparition of Our Lady on June 24, 1981. a group of Medjugorje children. Our Lady’s mission was to send a message of peace and love to the world, and Medjugorje is becoming known as a place of peace and beauty. Since then, Medjugorje has become the third most important place of apparitions in Europe, visited by more than a million people every year.

Medjugorje (means a place between the mountains) – a small village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in its southern part near the towns of Citluk and Mostar and the border with Croatia.
